PHRASES & CLAUSES two groups of words that are meaningful

PHRASE - group of words without a subject-verb combination

noun phrase - a phrase focus on a noun.

example: the big green box.

verb phrase - only have verbs in the phrase.

example: had been waiting

adjective phrases - a phrase focus on an adjective.

example: extremely hungry right now.

adverb phrase - only have adverbs in the phrase.

example: Dorothy works at a restaurant.

preposition phrases - phrase about a place or about time using prepositions. - example: in the garden.

example: Dorothy works at a restaurant.

CLAUSE - group of words with a subject-verb combination

independent clause - a clause that can be a sentence on its own.

example: Dorothy works at a restaurant.

dependent clause - a clause that cannot be a sentence on its own.

needs to combine with independent clause to form a sentence.

example: while Charlie was reading the newspaper.

TYPE OF SENTENCE

simple sentence - a sentence that contains a subject and a verb a.k.a independent clause.

example: I am a teacher (subject: I, verb: am)

Compound sentence - a sentence that has two or more independent clauses combined by using cordinating conjunctions.

example: I told my roommate to turn down the TV, but he didn't, so I got up and left. (Independent clause 1: I told my roommate to turn down the TV. Independent clause 2: he didn't. Independent clause 3: I got up and left. Coordinating conjunction: but, so.)

Complex sentence - a sentence that combine a dependent clause and an independent clause using subordinating conjuctions or a combination of relative clause using a relative pronoun.

example: I love to travel because I get to meet a lot of interesting people. (Independent clause: I love to travel. Dependent clause: because I get to meet a lot of interesting people. Subordinating conjuction: because)

example: I know a guy who plays guitar in a rock band. (Relative clause 1: I know a guy. Relative clause 2: He plays guitar in a rock band. Relative pronoun: who.)

Compound-complex sentence - a sentence with more than one independent clause (so it's a compound sentence) and also with one or more dependent clauses (so it's a complex sentence).

Example: If it rains tomorrow, bring your umbrella, or you might catch a cold. (Dependent clause: If it rains tomorrow. Independent clause/imperative: bring your umbrella. Coordinating conjunction: or. Independent clause: you might catch a cold.)
