Chapter 2 The Adaptability of the Brain
Muscles are like brains, they get bigger the more you practice them
More neurons and other tissue lurk in the back of the hippocampus
The brain has unlimited adaptability
The body’s adaptability is also unlimited
If you practice doing something enough, your brain will also repurpose certain neurons to help complete that task
The importance of getting out of your comfort zone
The body prefers stability
After being forced out of the comfort zone
Work out hard enough, and for long enough, and your body will change in ways that make that effort easier.
The greater the challenge, the greater the change, but don’t go too far
To keep changing, you have to keep pushing: running farther, faster, running uphill. If you don't continue to put some pressure on yourself, your body will maintain homeostasis, and even though the homeostasis is different at this time than before, you will stop improving.
Practice changes the structure of the brain
The brains of young people, that is, the brains of children and adolescents, are more adaptable than the brains of adults.
Cognitive and physiological changes induced by training need to be maintained. If you stop training, they begin to disappear.
Training over a long period of time develops certain parts of the brain and reduces other memory contents.
Potential can be built
With deliberate practice, the goal is not just to discover your potential, but to build it so that things that were once impossible become possible.
