Circulatory System

The circulatory system is a network of blood vessels that transports blood throughout the body. It consists of the heart, arteries, capillaries, and veins, which work together to pump oxygenated blood to cells and remove waste products. The heart acts as a pump, sending blood under pressure to the arteries, which branch out to smaller vessels called capillaries. Here, nutrients and oxygen are exchanged with cells, and blood then returns to the heart through veins, completing the circuit. This system is essential for maintaining life and health. Functions of the Circulatory System

Transportation of Nutrients and Oxygen

Blood carries oxygen to body tissues.

Blood transports nutrients to body cells.

Removal of Waste Products

Blood removes carbon dioxide from body cells.

Blood carries waste products to the kidneys and lungs for elimination.

Regulation of Body Temperature

Blood helps maintain body temperature.

Blood carries heat to the skin surface for dissipation.

Components of the Circulatory System

Heart

Pumps blood throughout the body.

This through the aorta as it carries blood from the heart to the system.

Consists of four chambers: left atrium, right atrium, left ventricle, and right ventricle.

The right atrium recieves oxygen-poor blood and pumps it to the right ventricle

The right ventricle pumps the oxygen-poor blood to the lungs

The left atrium recieves oxygen-rich blood from the lungs and pumps it to the left ventricle

The left ventricle pumps oxygenated blood to the body.

Blood Vessels

Arteries carry oxygenated blood away from the heart.

Veins carry deoxygenated blood towards the heart.

Capillaries take waste products away from your tissues

High blood pressure caused by excessive force against artery walls.

Can lead to heart disease and stroke.

Coronary Artery Disease

Arteries supplying the heart with blood become narrow or blocked.

Can cause chest pain and heart attacks.

Arrhythmias

Irregular heart rhythms that can interfere with blood flow.

Can cause symptoms such as palpitations and dizziness.
