For more than 500 years, the Forbidden City has been China's political and ceremonial base. When the town was finished in 1420, 24 emperors, families, and servants lived in the Forbidden City during the Ming dynasties (1368–1644) and the Qing dynasties (1644–1911). In 1925, when the precinct became a Palace Museum, the last occupant (which was also the last emperor in Imperial China), Puyi (1906-67), was removed. It is not an imperial district, but it remains one of the major cultural heritage sites, with an average of eighty thousand visitors a day and the most visited museum of the People's Republic of China.
