Improving the Cafeteria
Garden on Campus
Allows students to make new connections as well as improving their skills while working in groups. Allows students with different backgrounds, personalities, and majors.
A garden on campus can also minimize food insecurity in students on campus, forestnation.com states that 20-50 percent of college students experience food insecurity. With food costs rising a garden on campus could provide cheaper produce which in return could lessen the food insecurity in the students.
Having a garden on campus expands the opportunity of having an agricultre major or minor on campus, since we would have the garden on campus it would benefit the campus garden as well as students greatly if we offered classes on agriculture and allowed students to have a major or minor in agriculture. Learning how to care for the garden could benefit student knowledge and allow them to learn exactly what to do when working with produce you need to nurture.
Work Study
Work study at The Abbey provides students with the oppotunity to make money while also benefitting the campus and working with sports teams. Work study students get paid and if we had work study students tend to the garden it allows them to get hours while also having reliable students take care of the garden.
Students can apply to work with the garden strictly if they are passionate about nature and caring for plants, it allows the work study students to provide for students on campus and learn while hey work.
Fresh Produce
When dealing the The Abbey's vafeteria it is hard to get fresh produce, I have had many of my friends and peers complain that they have found moldy fruit and vegetables and having fresh produce would improve the health of our students. I have often had salads at the cafeteria and multiple times my lettuce has been wilted and tasted old and was not good.
While it is hard to find fresh poduce on campus having it could benefit the diets of students greatly. Harvard has done a study stating that "A diet rich in vegetables and fruits can lower blood pressure, reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke, prevent some types of cancer, lower risk of eye and digestive problems, and have a positive effect upon blood sugar, which can help keep appetite in check." (https://www.hsph.harvard.edu). The Abbey has more athletes attending school than non-athletic students, reading the statement from Harvard's study we know that having fresh produce keeps students healthy and full, which not only benefits non-athletic students but will have a great impact on athletic students. Having vegetables and fruits on our campus garden will impact the students diets greatly and keep The Abbey students healthy.
