Biological functions of lipids

Lipids play diverse and crucial roles in biological organisms. Phospholipids and cholesterol are the main structural components of cell membranes, constituting the scaffold that maintains normal cell structure and function. Fats and oils serve as energy reserve forms in organisms, rapidly releasing energy when needed to power life activities. Additionally, lipids provide insulation and protection, such as subcutaneous fat maintaining body temperature and preventing heat loss, while also forming biological barriers to prevent the invasion of harmful substances into organisms.
